Mecca ElliotCertified Meditation Instructor

Ms. Elliot was inspired to teach meditation as a result of overcoming numerous physical, psychological and emotional battles. She found herself taking numerous medications, diagnosed with a life-threatening autoimmune disease all while suffering from emotional blocks and limiting beliefs that were affecting her personal and work life.

This caused her to reflect and begin to realize her need for a miraculous change. During this challenging time, Mecca was introduced to meditation through the Oprah & Deepak 21-Day Meditation Experience.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START MEDITATING?

My health! Faced with the most challenging times in my life, my health and wellness began to fail. That’s what I call “my face on the bathroom floor moment”.  After being diagnosed I was quickly prescribed 11 different medications for various health issues including high blood pressure, ADHD, rheumatoid arthritis, and severe anxiety. This was the moment in my life where I had to look in the mirror at the woman I had become and make a life choice for survival. I decided to give meditation a try and ended up discovering my life’s path, passion and purpose.

WHAT DO YOU FEEL IS THE BIGGEST BENEFIT OF MEDITATING?

Stress management keeps me grounded and spiritually aligned, allowing me to reconnect with my internal source or conscious compass. Meditation is scientifically proven to increase longevity. There are extensive studies on the brain and the activity prior to meditation and the brain and activity a week after meditation. The results are mind blowing! The brain positively reacts immediately and during the meditative state your stress hormones decreases, blood pressure decreases, rapid heart rate slows down, breathing slows down and your immunity is strengthened. If we can add years to our life and improve our quality of life just by being still and mindful, I’m all in! It’s not some new invention or new pill, this is an ancient tool that has been practiced and proven for thousands of years. If it worked for Jesus, if it worked for the Buddha, if it worked for the Ascended Masters, if it worked for my ancestors, then it works for me.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE WHO HAS NEVER TRIED MEDITATING?

Have ZERO expectations. Many people have received false information about meditation like “if you have thoughts, you are not meditating”. This is false! For me, if you don’t have thoughts you are not alive, it’s impossible as a human being to not be thinking, so let’s clear this up first and release any preconceived notions you may have about meditation. This is a very individualistic practice. My experiences may not be your experiences. This is your journey and your practice. Begin with 5 to 15 minutes a day for one week and increase by 5 minutes each week until you reach 30 minutes. Then continue with 30 minutes once to twice daily. Gradually you will begin to notice the more you meditate, the quieter the mind naturally becomes. Be patient with the practice and pay attention to how you feel in one week. Most people will notice changes– some drastic, some subtle. Just be open to all the possibilities and witness the effortless shifts that will appear.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE WHO SAYS THEY CANNOT MEDITATE?

This was me years ago too. I am legitimately diagnosed with ADHD and in the past I always thought meditation would never work for my “monkey brain”… BUT within one week I began noticing unexpected and significant changes. By my surprise, I was able to be still for more that 5 minutes and my thoughts drastically slowed down. Just be open to the possibility and try something new! What I quickly learned with this practice is that anything is possible. Our body has the ability to heal and shift in ways western medicine cannot explain. If you just have an ounce of belief, you will witness the same magic and miracle I experienced. With the intense brain activity I lived with most of my life to the calm and peaceful person I am today– I believe that if I can do it, ANYONE can do it!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN MEDITATING AND HOW OFTEN?

I’ve been meditating seriously for 5 years. I meditate one to two times daily. Typically, 30 minutes in the morning and 20 to 30 minutes before bed. Meditating is a major part of my life and will be for the rest of my existence. Depending on what’s going on in my life I may have longer meditation sessions, sometimes lasting hours. I don’t limit myself to meditation, I have many daily practices and rituals that I have incorporated into my lifestyle since opening the door and letting meditation in. I love using tools like crystals, candles, spiritual baths and herbs as well. Meditation was just the door way to my healing and spiritual practices, and this is just the beginning. I will forever be in deep gratitude for meditation because it literally saved my life and opened my LIGHT.
